SCHOLARSHIPS

The New Brunswick Women's Institute grants 9 scholarships yearly.  The five categories are listed below.  For the first five there are Scholarship Regulations to follow and an application form to fill out:


1.  ALMA J. PORTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:   A yearly N.B.W.I. scholarship of $500.00 may be awarded to a first-year student enrolled in a degree course at U.N.B., Fredericton, N.B. with preference given to a student graduating from a N.B. High School, and having a record of community services. This scholarship will be paid upon notification of enrollment at the University.


2.  ALMA J. PORTER EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP:   An annual scholarship of $250.00 to be awarded to a student beginning the first year of the concurrent degree program in the Faculty of Education at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, N.B. This scholarship will be paid upon notification of enrollment at the University. The programs involved in the concurrent degree are:

  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Bachelor of Science
  • Bachelor of Physical Education
  • Bachelor of Computer Science
  • Bachelor of Business Administration


3.  N.B.W.I. EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP:  Five scholarships at a value of $250.00 each  may be awarded annually to five students to be used for any educational purpose, the purpose to be subject to the will of the Committee. These scholarships will be paid upon notification of enrollment in the selected courses.


4.  MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP:  An annual scholarship of $150.00 value may be awarded to a student enrolled at an accredited college to further their studies in music.  Payment will be made to recipient upon notification of enrollment.

5. N.B. WOMEN'S INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIP FOR W.I. MEMBER:  Value: $150.00  Established in 1978, this scholarship is awarded to a Women's Institute Member who wishes to further or upgrade her education or skills.  For the following scholarship only, there is no need to fill out an application form. Instead:

  1. Applicant must have been an active member of the W.I. for the past three years.
  2. Applicant shall request that a letter of recommendation be forwarded by her local branch directly to the Provincial Office. This letter should include a detailed outline of her involvement in branch activities.
  3. Applicant shall send her personal letter of application to the N.B. Women's Institute office, 681 Union Street, Fredericton, N.B. E3A 3N8.
  4. Closing date for submission of applications will be March 31 of each year.
  5. Proof of enrollment required before scholarship cheque is distributed.
  6. Applicant should include the following information:
  • purpose and plan for which the money will be used
  • need for financial assistance
  • number in family and ages
  • outline of training program
  • expected benefits from the proposed training.
