Achievements

ACHIEVEMENTS of the New Brunswick Women's Institute

  • For 100 years the NBWI has been a positive force in mainly rural New Brunswick, quietly providing assistance to those in need and supporting and often leading in initiatives to improve the community.  In many areas WI halls became the focus of rural life.
  • NBWI Branches have assisted students (and the government) by providing hot lunches, books, libraries, scholarships, music classes and, in the early years, improved sanitary conditions in schools.
  • NBWI gave support to the Red Cross during the World Wars by sending relief boxes, blankets and monetary contributions.
  • Our Branches have published many cook books and quilt books, served eat in and take out dinners and undertaken many other inventive projects to raise money to support our charitable causes.
  • We developed marriage and career awareness programs for teen-age girls.
  • We published resource books such as "Helping Others Help Themselves".
  • Each year we pass resolutions which we convey to the Government of the day.  Many of them have resulted in legislative and legal changes such as the recent decision to ban the use of hand-held communication devices when driving.
  • At our urging, the Provincial Government appointed the first Minister of Education.
  • The purple violet was adopted as the Province of New Brunswick's floral emblem at the request of the NBWI.
